Benjamin Asare
Subs on in WC opener
Asare had three saves and allowed zero goals in Wednesday's 1-0 win over Panama.
Analysis: Lawrence Ati-Zigli was given the starting nod for Ghana in the opening match of the World Cup, but he was forced off at halftime with an undisclosed injury. Asare replaced him for the second half and kept Panama out of the back of the net with three saves and two clearances. He wasn't forced to make any otherworldly save, but he was a stable force between the posts despite the unusual situation of having to come off the bench. It's unclear whether Ati-Zigli will be able to return for the next match, but whoever starts in goal will have a very tough matchup versus an England side which just put four past Croatia.
Trending towards starting
Asare is the expected starter in net for Ghana heading into the 2026 World Cup.
Analysis: Asare seems to be trending towards winning the starting job at the 2026 World Cup. The goalkeeper made six starts during the qualifying campaign and was generally good. The team in front of him will be set up defensively which should help him, though England and Croatia will prove to be major threats on the attack.
