In question to face Sweden
De Jong is uncertain for Saturday's match against Sweden due to an apparent lower-body injury, according to manager Ronald Koeman, per Mike Verveij and Jeroen Kapteijns of De Telegraaf. ""We'll have to wait and see how he reacts. It's an issue below the waist. There were other players involved. Quinten tripped over another player, and his head struck Frenkie."
Analysis: De Jong looks to be a possible absence for the Netherlands decisive match against Sweden, as the midfielder came out of their opener injured alongside fellow midfielder Quinten Timber. This will leave the midfielder to be tested and tried out before the contest, leaving him as a true late call. The team hopes to have him available, as he is a key starter, and Timber (concussion) was likely the first midfield replacement. That said, if de Jong is left out, Guus Til or Marten De Roon would be given the start.
Disciplined screen in midfield
de Jong recorded three tackles (two won), two clearances and two interceptions in Sunday's 2-2 draw versus Japan.
Analysis: de Jong delivered a disciplined and composed defensive midfield display in Sunday's 2-2 draw with Japan, winning two of his three tackle attempts, making two clearances and registering two interceptions as the deepest of the Netherlands' three midfielders in a role that required him to stay compact and protect the backline against Japan's rapid counter-attacking transitions. The Barcelona midfielder was unspectacular in possession but provided the defensive foundation that allowed Ryan Gravenberch and Tijjani Reijnders to operate with greater freedom, and his positioning was central to limiting Japan to just 10 total attempts despite the two goals they ultimately scored. De Jong had a solid 2025-26 season with Barcelona as they won La Liga, and his experience and reading of the game at international level will be crucial as the Netherlands look to recover from a dropped two points heading into their remaining Group F fixtures.
